Diplomacy and Solidarity: The Volta Basin Authority (VBA) pays tribute to the late Minister Sadio Camara at the Malian Embassy

Ouagadougou, 29 April 2026 – In an atmosphere marked by solemnity and solidarity, the Executive Director of the Volta Basin Authority (VBA) visited the Embassy of the Republic of Mali in Burkina Faso this afternoon, located at 2000 Avenue Pascal ZAGRE, Ouaga. The purpose of this official visit was to convey the institution’s condolences following the tragic attacks of 25 April, which claimed the life of the Malian Minister of Defence and Veterans Affairs, Lieutenant General Sadio Camara.

A tribute to a champion of regional security

Welcomed by the Malian diplomatic staff, the Executive Director, Mr Robert DESSOUASSI, expressed the deep sadness felt by all the staff of the VBA Executive Directorate. The sudden passing of Minister Sadio Camara, a central figure in Mali’s defence strategy and a key player in cross-border security cooperation, was described as “an immense loss for Mali and for the entire sub-region”.

Signing the book of condolences: an act of remembrance

The highlight of the visit was the signing of the book of condolences opened in tribute to the late distinguished figure. With a solemn hand, the head of the ABV wrote a message of support in it.

“It is with deep sadness and profound emotion that, on behalf of all the staff of the Executive Board of the Volta Basin Authority, I extend our most sincere condolences to the people and government of Mali, following the tragic attacks of 25 April 2026.

In the person of Defence Minister Sadio Camara, Mali has lost a devoted servant of the state, who fell in the line of duty whilst working for the sovereignty and security of his nation. My deepest sympathies go out to the families of all the victims, as well as to the many injured, to whom I wish a speedy recovery. In these dark hours, our solidarity with the Republic of Mali is unwavering.”

Regional solidarity in the face of adversity

This initiative reflects the VBA’s commitment to reaffirming that the management of natural resources and the security of states are intrinsically linked. In paying tribute to Minister Camara, the Organisation highlights the importance of unity in the face of the security challenges affecting the member countries of the basin.

The ABV delegation left the embassy after a brief meeting with the diplomatic representatives, reiterating its wishes for peace and stability for the Malian people, who have been severely affected by these tragic events.
