EPIC-Africa: Accra hosts the 2nd National Stakeholder Workshop on the Water-Energy-Food Nexus in the Volta Basin

Accra, June 8-12, 2026 — As part of the EPIC-Africa project, the consortium met in Accra for the second national stakeholder workshop, dedicated to the context of the water, energy and food nexus (WEF) and its governance in the Volta Basin.

Five days of intensive work around the Nexus

For five days, key players from Burkina Faso and Ghana, from the water, energy and food sectors, met to deepen their understanding of the interdependencies between these three areas essential to the development of the sub-region.

The first three days were dedicated to thematic workshops focusing on the coherence of sectoral policies and their mutual interactions. Experts, decision-makers, and practitioners exchanged views on the challenges and opportunities related to integrated natural resource management in the Volta Basin, drawing on concrete analyses and feedback from field experience.

The Transition Space: Building the future of the Nexus together

The last two days were dedicated to the Transition Space, an innovative concept for dialogue and co-creation focused on the future trajectories of the links between water, energy, and food. This shared space allowed participants to explore the dynamics at work in communities—both rural and urban—and to collectively reflect on the levers for transformation toward more sustainable and equitable resource management.

The Transition Space embodies a participatory approach that places communities at the heart of the decision-making process, recognizing the diversity of local contexts and needs.

VBA, a key player in the West African Nexus

This workshop highlighted the strategic role of the Volta Basin Authority (VBA) in coordinating the Nexus issues at the sub-regional level. By facilitating dialogue between stakeholders in the two riparian countries and promoting a shared vision for the transboundary management of resources, the VBA is establishing itself as a key pillar of Nexus governance in West Africa.
