The Volta Basin Authority (VBA) took part from 24 to 28 April 2023, in the 2023 edition of the seasonal agro-hydro-climatic forecast forum for the 2023 rainy season in Sudano-Sahelian Africa (PRESASS-2023). This meeting took place in Niamey, Niger.
It was organised by the AGRHYMET Regional Climate Centre for the Sahel and West Africa (ACR-AOS) of CILSS and the African Centre of Meteorological Applications for Development (ACMAD), in collaboration with the National Meteorological Agency of Niger, the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) and other world centres.
The participants in this forum were experts from the seventeen (17) countries of the CILSS/ECOWAS space in charge of the elaboration of agro-hydro-climatic information and representatives of six (6) River Basin Organizations of the sub-region. The forecasts prepared are as follows:
➢ In 2023, a generally average to wet rainy season is expected in the Sahel, with early to normal start dates, late to normal end dates, average dry sequences in the western part and longer tendencies in the eastern part.
➢ Overall surplus to average runoff is expected in the main Sahel river basins.
➢ For the specific case of the Volta basin, medium to surplus flows are expected in the western part. In the eastern part of the basin (Benin, Burkina Faso, Togo and Ghana), average to deficit flows are forecast.
The map below shows the different probabilities of occurrence of these expected flows in the Volta basin during this year 2023.
