From 16 to 19 September 2025, a capacity-building workshop on the use of the Decision Support Tool (DST) of the REWarD-Volta River project will be held in Lomé. This workshop will bring together experts from VBA National Focal Points (SFN) and technical partners, namely the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), DHI and Global Water Partnership West Africa (GWP-WA).
The representative of the Minister of Water and Sanitation, the Secretary General, emphasised the importance of water resources for economic activities essential to the food security of the populations of the Volta Basin.
‘It is crucial to protect our natural resources, especially water,’ he said, adding that the tools currently being developed will enable faster and more efficient water management in terms of both quality and quantity.
VBA Deputy Executive Director, Dr Millogo Dibi, called for knowledge sharing to prevent the impacts of climate change on the basin’s resources. He highlighted the strategic and economic challenges of this transboundary river for sub-regional integration.
The REWarD – Volta River Basin project aims to reverse trends in land and water degradation and support integrated ecosystem-based development by strengthening transboundary governance, restoration and conservation of these ecosystems for sustainable livelihoods in the Volta Basin.
The ABV, its member states and its partners GWP-WA, UNEP and IUCN, drawing on integrated ecosystem-based approaches for sustainable basin management, have initiated the project “Reversing Ecosystem and Water Degradation in the Volta River Basin / Reversing Ecosystem and Water Degradation in the Volta River Basin (Reward- Volta River Basin)”, funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
