Developing knowledge to fight against regional fragility and strengthen resilience in the volta basin, a team from the African Development Bank (AfDB) is on the mission at the Executive Directorate of the ABV.
This mission, which will take place from September 13 to 16, 2021, will allow AfDB experts to meet with ABV executive management to collect data as part of funding support.
The Bank’s Strategy for Combating Fragility and Building Resilience in Africa focuses on three areas of intervention. This project is important for the implementation of this strategy in two of the three intervention areas:
(i) Area of intervention 1: Capacity building of the State and establishment of effective institutions. In particular, the project contributes to the development of a resilient economic institution for better management of water resources.
(ii) Areas of intervention 2: Promotion of resilient societies through inclusive and equitable access to employment, basic services, and the shared benefits of natural resources. In particular, the project will support the responsible management of natural resources and the sharing of the benefits of their income.
The project is advancing much needed data collection and information generation on water supply, demand, and uses in the Volta Basin. This will have a significant impact on the current and future management and development of water resources, in particular on the effectiveness of the river basin organization (the Volta Basin Authority (VBA)) to promote and support economic development in the region to fight against fragility and strengthen the resilience of the population and the environment of the basin. Once available, this data/information will form part of the basic elements for the development of many management tools (such as flood/drought forecasting tools, water allocation, and hydro-economic modeling tools, etc.); for the strengthening of regional cooperation through the exchange of data and information and for the development of policies, strategies, agreements, etc., which will ensure the efficient, equitable and sustainable management and development of water resources in the Bowl.
